Hanyang Law offers an unmatched educational environment in the form of renowned faculty, unique curriculum, various opportunities for clinical training, strong encouragement of public service, and convenient facilities. Located in Seoul, Hanyang Law’s proximity to courts, commerce, and public interest activities enables students to experience the practice of law, as well as its theory, in one of the most vibrant legal and business communities in Korea. At Hanyang Law, you will acquire the foundation you need to practice at the highest level of competency in a rapidly changing world.
History of Hanyang Law
Elevating to a four-year university in 1959, Hanyang University has expanded its educational range to law, establishing College of Law. More than 50 years of growth and change have shaped the character and reputation of Hanyang Law.
since the beginning of the 21th century, the Korean government has tried to adopt a new “law school” system in order to reform the existing legal education system. In 2009, Hanyang University School of Law was inaugurated as one of the 25 Law Schools accredited by the Ministry of Education. Hanyang Law inherits and builds upon the honorable traditions which the original College of Law has nurtured and cherished since 1959. Hanyang Law’s alumni are working in every corner of the legal profession in Korea.
Degree Programs
Hanyang Law offers a number of different professional legal studies programs and graduate legal studies programs that are in the top tier of Korean law schools.
Professional legal studies programs include the Juris Doctor (J.D.) program and the Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) program:
The J.D. program is a three-year course of study which is designed to give students the intellectual foundations for legal study and to develop their analytical ability, communications skills, and professional ethics that are central to the practice of law. Students will also have the opportunity to focus their studies on areas of particular interest through advanced classes, clinics, and seminars. To be considered for the J.D. program, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or expect to finish one by the end of the academic year in which you apply.
The S.J.D. program is open to law graduates who already hold an J.D. or LL.M. degree and who have demonstrated exceptional analytical and research abilities. Our S.J.D. program expands students’ knowledge of law and legal processes, and provides
opportunities for them to gain expertise in a specialized field of law. The S.J.D. can be completed in one and a half year study and writing a dissertation.
The graduate legal studies programs include the Master of Laws (LL.M.) program and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law program:
The LL.M. program is a two-year course of study for those who have completed their bachelor’s degree, usually LL.B., from domestic or foreign universities, are interested in expanding their understanding of law and legal theory, and wish to pursue a career in legal education.
The Ph.D. in Law is an advanced degree program, which is designed to prepare J.D. or LL.M. graduates for careers in teaching and legal scholarship. The Ph. D. degree requires two years of course work, followed by supervised research and the completion of a doctoral dissertation. This program offers young scholars an opportunity to contribute to the development of law as an academic field. It admits a limited number of students based on their potential to contribute to legal scholarship.
